A kiállításon szereplő sorozat a Karácsony Sándor Közalapítvány a Józsefvárosért Józsefvárosi 30+ Művészeti Alkotói Támogatás Balogh Lajos emlékére 2025 ösztöndíjának támogatásával készült.

(Forced) migration is also a defining experience of marginalised social groups, including Roma communities. There is movement rooted in culture, movement through history, past and present, between societies, and between personal and collective memory. What happens when this identity is no longer defined by an external gaze, but by members of the community themselves, through their own experiences, desires, aspirations and memories? What happens when the image of the Roma person itself begins to travel—from the gaze of power towards self-definition? Drawing on imagination and on his own Roma and queer identities, as well as his personal and professional journey, photographic artist Béla Váradi portrays both himself and individuals from London’s GRT (Gypsy, Roma and Traveller) community public and as well as Bura’s Roma community in Budapest’s 8th district, revealing the diversity and individuality within these communities social groups.
One of the milestones of Váradi’s career has been his collaboration with Turner Prize-nominated artist Delaine Le Bas. This collaboration also leaves its mark on the performance presented at the exhibition opening: wrapped in the text-based textile characteristic of Le Bas’s practice, Váradi explores questions of exposure, vulnerability and corporeality—all within the complex interplay of his identities as an artist and as well as European, Hungarian, British and Roma.
The series presented in the exhibition was created with the support of the 2025 Józsefváros 30+ Artistic Creation Grant in memory of Lajos Balogh, awarded by the Sándor Karácsony Public Foundation for Józsefváros.
