A nagyközönség a munkáival először két éve találkozhatott, amikor Fortepan közel kétezer képét mindenki számára elérhetővé tette. A kiállításon látható képek túlnyomó többsége Budapesten készült. Észrevétlenül a nemzetközi utcai fotózás fősodrában úszott hetvenes évek Budapestjén. A kiállítás az Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography és a Robert Capa Kortárs Fotográfiai Központ együttműködésében valósul meg. A kiállítás Facebook eseménye: https://www.facebook.com/events/2019413665091304 További információk az Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography-ról: www.everydayphotography.org ══════════ Curatorial guided tour in the Sándor Kereki exhibition On Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 3:00 p.m., Szabolcs Barakonyi will lead a guided tour in the exhibition titled Sándor Kereki – Budapest in the seventies from a boy’s perspective Time: Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 3:00 p.m Location: Capa Center, 1st floor You can participate in the event with a ticket valid for the exhibition. Sándor Kereki should actually belong to the second wave of the great generation of photographers that started after the Second World War. But his exhibition could only be realised now, fifty years after Kereki stopped taking photographs. The general public was able to see his works for the first time two years ago, when Fortepan made nearly two thousand pictures available to everyone. The vast majority of the photographs in the exhibition were taken in Budapest. However, there is a small problem with the capital: generally, a city the size of Budapest would not be enough for street photography. Heavy traffic, lots of passersby, and curious faces are compulsory. No city in Hungary at the time was large enough for loitering urban photography, for pictures resembling those taken in metropolises. And yet, it did become large enough for Sándor Kereki, after all. This was achieved by focusing primarily on the city and its people. In the 1970s, things looked pretty dim in Hungary. Yet, Sándor Kereki’s photos showed how much wider the world would get without this gloominess. His images were not, however, deceitful veils concealing reality, like all the tolerated or supported products of the entertainment industry at the time. What really made the photos taken by Sándor Kereki wonderful was his ability to penetrate, with his camera in hand, the Iron Curtain. Unnoticed, from Budapest in the 1970s, he was part of the leading international trend of street photography. The guided tour will be held in Hungarian. The exhibition is realised in cooperation between the Eidolon Center for Everyday Photography and the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. The exhibition is hosted by the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. 2023. december 12-én, kedden 17:30-tól az Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography bemutatja Kereki Sándor – A hetvenes évek egy srác szemével című könyvét. Időpont: 2023. december 12., kedd, 17:30 Helyszín: Capa Központ, rendezvényterem „Ha abban az időszakban, Magyarországon létezett volna a »street photography« elnevezés, Kereki kiemelkedő hazai úttörője lenne. Date: Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 5:30 p.m Location: Capa Center, event hall "If the term 'street photography' had existed in Hungary during that time, Kereki would have been an outstanding pioneer in the country. However, since this category did not exist, we now get to know an artist with a unique vision through his recently discovered body of work, capturing the life of urban people far beyond the contemporary Hungarian photographic understanding." /Zsolt Petrányi/ Guests: Szabolcs Barakonyi, photo editor of the book Sándor Kereki, photographer/cameraman Zsolt Petrányi, author of the essay published in the book György Stalter, photographer Moderator: Klára Szarka, photo historian While Sándor Kereki began taking pictures in the late sixties, he discontinued his practice in the early 1980s. His photographic collection, spanning just a few years, was initially unveiled on Fortepan online many years later, in 2021. Despite his youthful start and early cessation, Kereki's life's work stands as a significant accomplishment in the annals of Hungarian photography, deserving a revered place in the medium's artistic canon. The exhibition on view in Capa Center, along with the inaugural book of Kereki's photographs edited by curator Szabolcs Barakonyi and designed by Ferenc Eln, featuring a foreword by art historian Zsolt Petrányi, marks the commencement of this canonization effort of an unsung hero of Hungarian photography. Kereki Sándor a nyolcvanas évek elején tette le fényképezőgépét. További információk az Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography-ról: www.everydayphotography.org EN: Sándor Kereki – Budapest in the seventies from a boy’s perspective Opening: December 6, 6:00 PM CEST Opening speech: Miklós Tamási On view: December 7, 2023 –February 4, 2024 Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center 8 Nagymező Street, 1065 Budapest, Hungary Monday: Closed Tuesday–Friday: 1pm–6pm Saturday–Sunday: 10am–6pm Tickets are required to visit the exhibition. Some of Sándor Kereki’s pictures were uploaded to Fortepan in 2021, but his photographs have a place in the canon of Hungarian photography regardless. In order to get there, it is absolutely necessary to organise a photo exhibition that selects from the entire oeuvre. Sándor Kereki was born in 1952 and at the age of 16, while still in high school, he started taking pictures with the camera his father gave him for his birthday. He never studied photography in a formal school setting. When most of the photographs were taken, he lived in the neighbourhood of the sixth and seventh districts – so many local locations can be recognized in the pictures. The Capa Központ, the location of the exhibition, is very well connected to the streets that the photographer visited on his walks. Sándor Kereki put down his camera in the early eighties. Before that, for a good ten years, he was walking around the city, looking for situations, looks and faces. He took his photographs for himself, for his own entertainment and never for someone’s request. He did it in an age when people still allowed themselves to be photographed. Sándor Kereki’s photos in the Hungarian seventies evoked the now internationally recognized category of street photography. His closed and completed oeuvre consists of seven thousand exposed negatives. We are very fortunate to be able to select today’s fresh-looking images for the exhibition together with him, and to bring the exhibited material into dialogue with the photographic lessons of the time that has passed since then. The exhibition is realised in cooperation between the Eidolon Center for Everyday Photography and the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. The exhibition is hosted by the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. Ticket prices: https://capacenter.hu/en/admission-fees/ The project is part of the Budapest 150 anniversary year, with the financial support of the Pro Cultura Urbis Public Foundation.
